The Story Of An Hour/Mother Savage Essay In the short story of Mother Savage by Guy de Maupassant, we learn of what life was like for a widowed mother whose only son goes off to war, the setting taking place in Virelogne, France during the Franco-Prussian war. Guy de Maupassant (1850-1893) lived during this time and participated in the war himself. Through Historical, Biographical, and New Historical critical analysis of the author, and the time period, we will see that the effects of the war and how it greatly influenced this piece of literature. Formally known as Guy de (Henri Rene Albert) Maupassant, he was a French novelist and short-story writer. He is deemed one of the modern masters of the art of the short story and has influenced practitioners of that genre from his time to the present. (Guy de Maupassant Encarta Encyclopedia 2001. CD-ROM. Microsoft Electronic Publishing, 2001) Maupassant did not grow up a natural writer; In fact he did not consider a literacy career until he was almost thirty years old. Before this, he studied law in Paris, but the Franco-Prussian War of 1870-1871, which destroyed his familys fortune and forced Maupassant to find work as a government office clerk, interrupted his studies. To divert himself from the office work he found tedious, he swam, boated, pursued feminine company at fashionable places, and began to write. His parents separated when he was 11 years old. Maupassant grew up in his native Normandy. In 1869 Maupassant started to study law in Paris, but soon, at age 20, he volunteered to serve in the army during Franco-Prussian War. (http://www. online-literature. com/maupassant/ Literature Network) This comes into play when in the text it says: When the war broke out, Mother Savages son, who was then thirty three years old, volunteered, leaving his mother all alone. However, no one felt sorry for the old woman because everybody knew she had money. The author himself also volunteered to fight with the French army. There is not mention if his mother was widowed, but his familys fortune was destroyed by the outbreak of the war. Could this possibly been what Maupassant desired for his own family that they had money? The Franco-Prussian War or Franco-German War, 1870-71, a conflict between France and Prussia that signaled the rise of German military power and imperialism. Microsoft Electronic Publishing, 2001) We enter further into the story as the Prussians arrived, and they were billeted with the people of the area, according to their wealth and resources of each family. Because Mother Savage was known to have money- she would be assigned four Prussian soldiers to come into her home. These soldiers would help out around the house, and could be seen cleaning up the kitchen, washing dishes, chopping wood, peeling potatoes, washing linen-in short, doing all the chores like four good boys working for their own mother. (Fiction A Pocket Anthology R. S. Gwyn Page 65 paragraph 3) These soldiers appeared to be like second sons to Mother Savage, doing what her son would be doing if he were there. The author inserts an interesting thought She liked them well enough, too, those four enemies of hers; for country people do not feel patriotic hatred-those feelings are reserved for the upper classes. (Fiction A Pocket Anthology R. S. Gwyn page 66 paragraph 1) She liked the four soldiers as sons of her own as well, yet she saw them also as the enemy. It wasnt until she received information of her sons death that her behavior changed dramatically. At first it describes her as being overwhelmed by the news. No real emotion at first, as if she is letting reality set in, and then her emotions take over and she begins to cry as she tries to visualize her sons death She then hears the voices of the four Prussian soldiers coming and she quickly hides the letter in her pocket and met them very calmly. As she was preparing dinner, the soldiers were able to bring back a rabbit so they could have something good to eat for dinner. When it came time to kill the rabbit for dinner she did not have the heart to do it; this was not the first rabbit she has ever had to kill. One of the soldiers hit the rabbit over the head and she proceeded to prepare the rabbit for dinner and the sight and warmth of the blood made her think about her son who had just been killed in battle by the Prussians. After dinner she asks the soldiers that after a whole month of being together she didnt even know their names. They understood, with some difficulty what she wanted and gave her their names; she insisted they write it down on a piece of paper along with their addresses of their families. then she folded up the paper and put it into her pocket, next to the letter which had told her about the death of her son. It is unknown how Kates mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother felt about this fight for womens rights, but one can assume that being the strong women they were, most likely they had very strong beliefs in womens rights as well. They had, after all, already been widowed and had been the man and the woman in the house for years. The OFlaherty women had strong souls and they knew how to take care of themselves. Safely said, Kate Chopin had a strong desire to be her own woman. She would make her own rules. Having been raised and graduated from a very prestigious Catholic school, Kate was taught very strict values and guidelines. She doesnt seem to use those values when living her life, as one would see by her many affairs after her husbands death, one with a married man. Kate appears to be a woman filled with passion and desires; she went after what she wanted and she said what she thought, even when it was scandalous. Kate does not restrict herself to a certain way of acting, living, or writing, as is seen in the content of her stories and novels. In a time that it was not acceptable for women to speak out about sexuality and independence, Kate screams it in her writing. Her stories brought on many controversies and was not widely appreciated or accepted until many years after Kates death. Kate Chopin leaves a legacy behind, though. Along with many very popular stories, her unacceptable literatures have now been published and are considered masterpieces. Chopin wrote of a time in the future where women had the freedom to write what they felt, but she did it in a time when it was unacceptable. Through her writing, Kate told a story of womens rights in their own. She fought this battle alone and it was Kate Chopins boldness and courage, which left her to stand out among all others. Mrs. Mallard is known at the beginning of the story to have a heart condition. What kind of a heart condition, we do not know. As Mrs. Mallard learns of her husbands death She did not hear the story as many women have heard the same, with a paralyzed inability to accept its significance. (Fiction A Pocket Anthology R. S. Gwyn page 71 paragraph 2) She is demonstrating that she is not remorseful and that the institution of marriage was more of a prison to her than anything else. She then asks to be left alone as she goes to her room, and this is where the thoughts start churning in her mind as to what she is going to do next with a metaphorical chain that has now been loosed from her. Now that she was a widow, she had the social status that was acceptable by society. There would be no powerful will bending her in that blind persistence with which men and women believe they have a right to impose a private will upon a fellow creature. Gwyn page 72 paragraph 4) In 1855 on November 1, being one of the founders of the Pacific Railroad, her father was aboard the train on its inaugural journey over the Gasconade Bridge, which collapsed, killing many of its passengers. After only two months into her term at Sacred Heart, Kate came home and was to be educated by her great-grandmother. Eliza Faris OFlaherty, Kates mother, was a member of the prominent French-Creole community and a member of an exclusive social circle. Eliza was only 27 years old when she heard of her 50-year-old husbands death. She may have been depressed, yet liberated by the news, or so Kate Chopins Story of an Hour suggests: a wife, hearing of her husbands death in a train accident, delights in thoughts of freedom. As we can see by this family tragedy, Kate Chopin wrote this story as an expression of how she felt about women and womens rights. She was also sharing what her grandmother felt as she lost her husband in a railroad disaster. Could this be a re-creation of her grandmothers situation? It us unknown to us whether or not Kates grandmother had a heart condition or not, or how she died, but Mrs. Mallard was overwhelmed once again at the knowledge of her husbands state of being alive that she died of heart disease-of joy that kills. Once again we can see that stories from peoples lives influence what we write. This was evident in the life of Kate Chopin. She was known as A Woman Ahead of Her Time- in that she stepped out of the traditional role of a woman of her time, and made it known the feelings of women however controversial it may be, she made it known to all.

The first movement that got my family and I so close to the Catholic Church was the encounter of a retreat called Acts. My dad first came across this retreat late November of 2001. It makes people more anxious to come because they feel like they have to know what happens in the retreat, as did l. The Teen Acts retreat changed me as a person in so many ways, and completely made a big impact in my life. I cannot even begin to list all the different things it has done to me, and for me. It was such an amazing experience and touches so many people who are enduring hard times in their life. I am proud to say that I have staffed two Teen Acts retreats and other smaller retreats in my parish. As most people remember the positive things that have impacted their life the most, Acts was mine. Hands down, living an Acts retreat will change your life and your perspective at life in a variety of ways. You wont regret living your Acts retreat one bit. The Action/Adventure Genre The Action/Adventure Genre The Action/Adventure Genre By Maeve Maddox Although I used The DaVinci Code as an example in my discussion of the mystery, suspense, and, thriller genres, Dan Browns novels might be more appropriately placed in the action/adventure category. The Public Library of Charlotte Mecklenburg County (NC) includes Browns The Lost Symbol (2009) in its list of Action-Adventure reviews. This explanatory note precedes the list: Also known as the male equivalent of the romance novel, these books offer intrigue, edge-of-your-seat excitement, and exotic locales with characters who are smart, daring, often heroic, and sometimes evil. Just how slippery genre labels can be, even for librarians, can be discovered in the list that follows this description of the action/adventure genre. One of the books. A Bad Day for Sorry (2009) by Sophie Littleton, is set in a sleepy Missouri town. and features a female protagonist in search of a missing toddler. Agent Jeff Herman defines the action-adventure novel in terms of premise and scenario trajectory. The plot resembles the traditional heroic quest story, the monomyth as defined by Joseph Campbell: A hero ventures forth from the world of common day into a region of supernatural wonder: fabulous forces are there encountered and a decisive victory is won: the hero comes back from this mysterious adventure with the power to bestow boons on his fellow man. The Hero with a Thousand Faces Hermans description of the genre evokes a 21st century setting: Some stories are stocked with an array of international terrorists, arms-smugglers, drug-dealers, and techno-pirates. Favorite settings include jungles, deserts, swamps, and mountainsany sort of badlands (dont rule out an urban environment) that can echo the perils that resound through the storys human dimension. (Jeff Herman, Guide to Book Publishers, Editors, Literary Agents [2010], p. 893.) The protagonist in this kind of adventure usually has a trusty posse helping him achieve the quest. Typically, one of the trusted group betrays the others. A site called The Art of Manliness lists 50 fictional adventure books that belong in The Essential Mans Library. Although the list does include the works of living writers, it is unexpectedly heavy on the classics. Kipling and Rider Haggard, for example, are well represented. Often throughout a person’s life negative and positive influences are infused into one’s mind through friends, and family. In Mark Twain’s novel, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, the lead character, grows up under the guidance of three different adult views on how a boy should behave. Huck, the lead character, learns helpful and damaging life lessons from the Widow Douglas, Miss Watson, Jim, and pap. To begin with, the Widow Douglas and Miss Watson are two wealthy sisters who adopt Huck. Thw two sister’s want to teach Huck the importance of religion, manners, and behaving. After staying in the house for a while, Huck realizes that â€Å"it [is] rough living in the house all the time†, because the Widow Douglas wants to â€Å"sivilize [him]†(Twain, 1). When dinner is ready the widow would call Huck to the table, but before they began eating the widow needs â€Å"to tuck down her head and grumble a little over the victuals† (1). Huck knew there was nothing was wrong with the food but because the widow was religious she was trying to instill in Huck that he needs to bless his food and give thanks to God for it. The widow is trying to make religion a part of Huck’s life, which seems to be a negative impact on his life considering the many times Twain portrays religious persons as being gullible. Miss Watson, the more forceful of the two sisters, i s adamant about getting huck to behave. To help mold Huck into a person that â€Å"go[es] to the good place† also known as heaven, Miss Watson constantly tells him things to do to help him behave such as â€Å"don’t put your feet up there† and â€Å"set up straight†(2). Besides adopting a religion, and behaving, Hucks appearance needed to be neat and respectable. Although the new clothes made Huck â€Å"sweat and sweat,... ...who has ever â€Å"kep’ his promise to ole Jim† (80). Another character quality that Huck learns from Jim is that African-Americans are people too that can feel the same about their family as Caucassians feel about theirs. Huck often hears Jim moaning in the night about being homesick and missing his family. This is when Huck understands that just because Jim is African-American does not mean that they are incapable of having the same feelings as Caucassians. In general Jim affects Huck positively because now Huck is humble, trustworthy, and not as influenced by society about African-Americans. Ultimately, Huck’s personality is shaped by three adults with different guidance styles. In general Miss Watson, Widow Douglas, and Jim put in beneficial character traits to help shape Huck Finn as a person, while pap only added worthless drivel such as not going to school.

It was completed in 1996. Designed by Oscar Niemeyer with the assistance of structural engineer Bruno Contarini, who had worked with Niemeyer on earlier projects, the MAC-Niterà ³i is 16 meters high; its cupola has a diameter of 50 metres with three floors. The museum projects itself over Boa Viagem (â€Å"Bon Voyage,† â€Å"Good Journey†), the 817 square metres (8,790 sq ft) reflecting pool that surrounds the cylindrical base â€Å"like a flower,† in the words of Niemeyer. A wide access slope leads to a Hall of Expositions, which has a capacity for sixty people. Two doors lead to the viewing gallery, through which can be seen theGuanabara Bay, Rio de Janeiro, and Sugarloaf Mountain. The saucer-shaped modernist structure, which has been likened to a UFO, is set on a cliffside, at the bottom of which is a beach. In the film Oscar Niemeyer, an architect committed to his century,[1] Niemeyer is seen flying over Rio de Janeiro in a UFO which then lands on the site, suggesting this to be the origin of the museum. The MAC Scandal was a political scandal that occurred when the mayor Joà £o Sampaio inaugurated the Niterà ³i Contemporary Art Museum. The MAC is located on a hill slope that had locked construction rights set by the city council. Therefore in December 1996, the new mayor, Jorge Roberto Silveira sent a project to the city council to obtain the rights to construction in that area. The project was accepted in only two days, giving permission to build buildings up to 40 metres (130 ft). The city council did not know that days before, Zeca Mocarzel, sub-mayor of the Niterà ³i’s Oceanic Region (of Jorge Roberto Silveira’s government) bought the lands at a very low price, claiming to the old owner that the region was locked and nothing could be done there. So he bought the area and, after the inauguration of the MAC which substantially increased the property values of the nearby areas, later sold the land for more than 5 million reals, approximately 1,250,000 US dollars at the time (2,720,000 dollars today). Because the scandal occurred just before Christmas, the people of Niterà ³i said that it was Jorge Roberto Silveira, Zeca Mocarzel and Joà £o Sampaio’s (long-time Niterà ³i’s politicians) â€Å"Christmas present†.

The correspondence between the Greek and Roman gods is closer than that of, say, the Romans and the Britons, because the Romans adopted many of the myths of the Greeks, but there are cases where Roman and Greek versions are only approximations. With that proviso in mind, here are the names of the Greek gods and goddesses, paired with the Roman equivalent, where there is a difference. Major Gods of the Greek and Roman Pantheons Greek Name Roman Name Description Aphrodite Venus The famous, beautiful love goddess, the one awarded the apple of Discord that was instrumental in the start of the Trojan War and for the Romans, the mother of the Trojan hero Aeneas. Apollo Apollo Brother of Artemis/Diana, shared by Romans and Greeks alike. Ares Mars The god of war for both Romans and Greeks, but so destructive he was not much loved by the Greeks, even though Aphrodite loved him. On the other hand, he was admired by the Romans, where he was associated with fertility as well as the military, and a very important deity. Artemis Diana The sister of Apollo, she was a hunting goddess. Like her brother, she is often combined with the deity in charge of a celestial body. In her case, the moon; in her brother's, the sun. Although a virgin goddess, she assisted in childbirth. Although she hunted, she could also be the animals' protector. In general, she is full of contradictions. Athena Minerva She was a virgin goddess of wisdom and crafts, associated with warfare as her wisdom led to strategic planning. Athena was the patron goddess of Athens. She helped many of the great heroes. Demeter Ceres A fertility and mother goddess associated with cultivation of grain. Demeter is associated with an important religious cult, the Eleusian mysteries. She is also the law-bringer. Hades Pluto While he was the king of the Underworld, he was not the god of death. That was left to Thanatos. He is married to Demeter's daughter, whom he abducted. Pluto is the conventional Roman name and you might use it for a trivia question, but really Pluto, a god of wealth, is the equivalent of a Greek god of wealth called Dis. Hephaistos Vulcan The Roman version of this god's name was lent to a geological phenomenon and he required frequent pacification. He is a fire and blacksmith god for both. Stories about Hephaestus show him as the lame, cuckolded husband of Aphrodite. Hera Juno A marriage goddess and the wife of the king of the gods, Zeus. Hermes Mercury A many-talented messenger of the gods and sometimes a trickster god and god of commerce. Hestia Vesta It was important to keep the hearth fires burning and the hearth was the domain of this stay-at-home goddess. Her Roman virgin priestesses, the Vestals, were vital to the fortunes of Rome. Kronos Saturn A very ancient god, the father of many of the others. Cronus or Kronos is known for having swallowed his children, until his youngest child, Zeus, forced him to regurgitate. The Roman version is far more benign. The Saturnalia festival celebrates his pleasant rule. This god is sometimes conflated with Chronos (time). Persephone Proserpina The daughter of Demeter, the wife of Hades, and another goddess important in religious mystery cults. Poseidon Neptune The sea and fresh water springs god, brother of Zeus and Hades. He is also associated with horses. Zeus Jupiter Sky and thunder god, the head honcho and one of the most promiscuous of the gods.   Minor Gods of the Greeks and Romans Greek Name Roman Name Description​ Erinyes Furiae The Furies were three sisters who at the behest of the gods, sought vengeance for wrongs. Eris Discordia The goddess of discord, who caused trouble, especially if you were foolish enough to ignore her. Eros Cupid The god of love and desire. Moirae Parcae The goddesses of fate. Charites Gratiae The goddesses of charm and beauty. Helios Sol The sun, titan and great-uncle or cousin of Apollo and Artemis. Horai Horae The goddesses of the seasons. Pan Faunus Pan was the goat-footed shepherd, the bringer of music and the god of pastures and woods. Selene Luna The moon, titan and great-aunt or cousin of Apollo and Artemis. Tyche Fortuna The goddess of chance and good fortune. Ancient Sources of Greek and Roman Gods The great Greek epics, Hesiods Theogony and Homers Iliad and Odyssey, provide much of the basic information on the Greek gods and goddesses. The playwrights add to this and give more substance to the myths alluded to in the epics and other Greek poetry. Greek pottery gives us visual clues about the myths and their popularity.
